The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain—and possibly tingling, numbness, or weakness—that originate in the lower back and travel through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Like other kinds of nerve complaints the pain can radiate to other parts of the body. At Quantum we often see debilitating sciatic pain with many of our patients unable to sit for any period. Treatment for sciatica is wide ranging from bed rest to medication to surgery.
Laser therapy (or cold therapy) is able to treat sciatica by reducing nerve irritability over cumulative treatments. We may incorporate acupuncture and trigger point injections to aid in releasing any impingements. Many of our patients who desire to reduce or cease taking painkillers or for whom injections have failed opt for laser therapy to manage sciatica pain.
